Langston Hughes The Face Of Harlem Literacy - 1147 Words
The Face of Harlem Literacy James Mercer Hughes, most commonly known as Langston Hughes, was a notorious writer during the Harlem Renaissance period. The Harlem Renaissance is considered a cultural explosion of African American cultures during the 1920ââ¬â¢s. Hughes was an important figure and supporter during the Harlem Renaissance era. Through Hughes literature and activism during the 1920ââ¬â¢s he created a positive change within the black community. The Harlem Renaissance coincided with the Roaring Twenties. The Roaring Twenties was also during the 1920ââ¬â¢s after World War 1. This time frame is referred to as a time of economic booming. Langston Hughes was brought up by his grandmother, Mary Langston, in Joplin, Missouri where he was born on February 1st, 1902. (Leach 1) His father had moved to Mexico after he and his mother had separated. His mother often moved from city to city looking for work to support her young son and mother. (Leach 2) After his grandmother passed in his teens, he stayed with his mother until he graduated high school, then he went to stay with his father. (Leach 3). After he came back to the United States he attended Columbia University. After Columbia, he travelled to Spain, Africa, and Paris. Throughout his time traveling, Hughes was publishing his poetry; his first poem was published in 1921, and his first book in 1926 (Leach xvi). Hughes was a very influential figure in relation to the cultural blossoming of black culture during the 1920ââ¬â¢s. In many ways he shaped the way black artist presented themselves and how they were perceived (Leach 36). He was notorious for writing on topics that made others feel uncomfortable. He was very vocal about the hypocrisy surrounding the Harlem Renaissance. This paper explores a published article that reports on results of Task Switching and Their Effects on Cognitive Processes with in an individualââ¬â¢s mind when asked to do something. This article addresses the shifts in between cognitive tasks, the reaction time and error time based on the task switch. This article also addresses how to decrease the chance of error by giving a chance of having an individual prepare beforehand. This paper will examine Monsellââ¬â¢s (2003) research in relation to how Task Switching is fully understood and what effects on the brain for the individual switching task and its cognitive process. Based on reviewing the article by Monsell (2003), the problem he is looking to address h ow to reduce reaction time based on the control processes that reconfigure mental resources for a change of a task by requiring subjects to switch frequently among a small set of simple tasks. The cost of task switching for an individual normally leads to a higher error rate, one factor that has a big impact on error rate is the environment and how adjustable people are. Monsell (2003) states ââ¬Å"responses take longer to initiate on a ââ¬Å"switch trailâ⬠, than on a ââ¬Å"non-switchâ⬠or tasks repetition trail, often by a substantial amount. The concept of the task-setting requires each individual to pay attention to, and classification of, a different element or attribute of the stimulus, or retrieval from memory or computation of a different property of the stimulus Monsell (2003). The point of task-setting examines how each individuals mind set should change based on the new task given. Task set gives an individualââ¬â¢s mind state to change to perform the speci fic operation based on the new task given at the change. When a task switch or task set is implemented, the individual doing the switch, mind frame goes through a state of task set reconfiguration. GSD has got geographical coverage which would enhance their strategy and it could also use the core values of Calveta, so that they could increase the reputation of the company as a whole. It is also better to increase the share capital than going for a bank loan, because the companyââ¬â¢s financial position is bad. The employees of GSD have to be provided with training and they also have to recruit few into the company and restructure the organization by shifting managers from Calveta to GSD. A new organizational structure has to be made that accommodate significant growth while preserving the companyââ¬â¢s core values. It has to consider in dividing the sales and operations functions completely, creating additional regions and districts, and eliminating management levels. The case has shown the examination of the role of staffing; training, developing, and treatment of employees can play in a firm committed to high-quality service. It also explores the idea of the structure of the organization that can accommodate growth, effective communication, and the maintenance of the ethics and the culture of the company.
